Critical Timing: The blocked account must be opened and funded before your visa appointment — not after, not during. Most providers take 1–3 weeks. Start early.
The Legal Requirement
German immigration law (§ 16b AufenthG) requires every non-EU student to prove they can financially support themselves for one year of study. The minimum is €11,904 — calculated as €992 × 12 months. Without this proof, your student visa application is automatically rejected.
How It Works
You deposit €11,904 into a special German blocked account before applying for your visa. The money is 'blocked' — you cannot freely withdraw it. After arriving in Germany, €992 is automatically released to your German bank account every month. The remaining balance stays blocked until the next release cycle.
Why 'Blocked'?
The German government designed it this way to guarantee you won't become financially dependent on the state (Sozialleistungen). By locking the funds and releasing them monthly, they ensure you have a steady income throughout your studies without needing government support. It's a mutual trust mechanism.
The Document
One PDF replaces all your other financial proof.
Once your €11,904 is confirmed received, your provider issues a blocking certificate — a single one-page document with your name, the locked amount, and the bank's official stamp.
You print this, attach it to your visa application, and the embassy accepts it as full proof of financial means. No further bank statements required.

Critical Mistakes to Avoid
These are the most common reasons students delay their visa application or have their blocked account rejected.
- 01CRITICAL
Waiting Too Long to Open
Procrastinating on opening the blocked account. With SWIFT transfer delays (3–7 days) plus provider processing (5–7 days), the minimum realistic timeline is 2–4 weeks — and that's before your visa appointment.
Fix: Open your blocked account the same week you receive your university admission letter. Do not wait for any other step to be complete. - 02CRITICAL
Transferring the Wrong Amount
Sending €11,000 instead of €11,904, or sending more than required and expecting the provider to handle it. Some providers reject non-exact amounts. Even €1 short invalidates the certificate.
Fix: Transfer exactly €11,904 via SWIFT. Call your Indian bank in advance to confirm the exact amount including any conversion, and verify with the provider how to handle exchange rate differences. - 03CRITICAL
Opening the Account After the Visa Appointment Date
Booking a visa appointment first and then trying to open the blocked account — a common mistake made by students who got a quick appointment slot. The embassy requires the certificate at the appointment, not after.
Fix: Open the blocked account before booking your visa appointment. The certificate must be in your hand before you can validly attend the appointment. - 04HIGH RISK
Not Keeping the Certificate Secure
Losing the PDF or not making physical copies. The certificate is a one-time document — if your laptop is stolen or the file is corrupted before the appointment, you have a serious problem.
Fix: Download the certificate immediately, store on cloud (Google Drive, iCloud, email), print 3 physical copies, and keep one with a family member. Never carry your only copy. - 05HIGH RISK
Choosing a Slow Provider Then Missing the Appointment
Opting for Deutsche Bank (free setup) without accounting for the 4–8 week processing time, then getting a visa appointment that's 5 weeks away — only to have no certificate in time.
Fix: If your visa appointment is within 6 weeks, use Fintiba or Expatrio exclusively. The €89 fee is trivial compared to rescheduling a visa appointment (which adds 2–4 more months of delay). - 06WATCH OUT
Not Accounting for SWIFT Transfer Delays
Students assume SWIFT transfers are fast like UPI. They are not. An international bank wire from India to Germany via SWIFT takes 3–5 business days, sometimes more during Indian or German bank holidays.
Fix: Initiate the SWIFT transfer at least 10 business days before your visa appointment. Check with your Indian bank for any delays they anticipate. Ask the blocked account provider what to do if the funds are late.
Common Questions
Everything you need to know about blocked accounts
A blocked account (Sperrkonto) is a regulated German bank account where you deposit €11,904 before applying for your student visa. The German government requires this as proof that you can financially support yourself for one year without needing state assistance. The money is 'blocked' — you cannot freely withdraw it — and is released to you at €992 per month after you arrive in Germany.
Step 11 Complete
Account open. Now get your visa.
Your blocked account certificate is the centrepiece of your visa application. With it in hand, you've removed the biggest financial hurdle. The embassy will accept it as complete proof of financial means.
Note: The blocked account process runs parallel to your visa application preparation. Start opening your account while gathering other documents — don't wait for this to be done first.
