The dMAT Exam for Germany — What Indian Master's Applicants Need to Know

Germany has added a new test — the dMAT (digital Master Test) — to the APS process for certain Indian Master's applicants. This guide breaks down exactly who it applies to, when it kicks in, how the exam is structured, what it costs, how it's scored, and how much it actually matters for your admission.

Quick Answer

The dMAT is a new, mandatory aptitude test for Indian students applying for a Master's in Germany whose bachelor's is in Engineering, Commerce/Finance/Economics, or Business/Management. It applies from the Summer Semester 2027 intake onwards, costs €150, and becomes part of your APS file — it does not replace APS. There is no pass/fail mark. Bachelor's and PhD applicants are exempt.

What is the dMAT?

dMAT stands for digital Master Test. It is a standardised, computer-based aptitude test for Master's applicants from India, administered by g.a.s.t. (Gesellschaft für Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung) — the same German organisation behind TestDaF and TestAS. The result is folded into your APS certificate and shared with the German universities you apply to.

Crucially, the dMAT measures reasoning and problem-solving ability — not memorised syllabus. It looks at how well you analyse information, spot patterns, and apply concepts to unfamiliar problems, giving universities a common yardstick to compare applicants from very different colleges and grading systems.

The New Rule — Who Has to Take It?

The dMAT is required only if all three of these are true: you are Indian, you are applying for a Master's, and your bachelor's degree falls into one of these three field groups:

Engineering

B.E. / B.Tech across engineering disciplines — including Computer Science and IT taught within an engineering degree.

Commerce & Economics

B.Com, and B.A./B.Sc. in Commerce, Accounting, Finance or Economics.

Business & Management

BBA, BBM, BMS and equivalent business/management bachelor's degrees.

You are exempt from the dMAT if:

You are applying for a Bachelor's degree, or for a PhD / doctoral program.
Your bachelor's is outside the three fields — e.g. standalone Computer Science, BCA, B.Sc. Data Science/IT, Pharmacy, Architecture, or Law.
You are joining through an official exchange, double-degree, or university-partnership program.
You completed, submitted, or received your APS certificate before 29 June 2026 (transitional exemption).

Key Dates — First Cycle

The dMAT applies from the Summer Semester 2027 intake. If you are applying for Winter 2026/27, you do not need it. These are the dates for the first test cycle:

Registration opens
29 June 2026
Registration closes
15 September 2026
First exam date
26 September 2026
Certificate available
12 October 2026

This cycle is for the Summer 2027 intake. Another exam cycle runs ahead of each Winter intake, and more follow every year — so there isn't only one date to catch. And because your score never expires, anyone can sit whichever cycle fits their timeline and use that result for any future intake. There's no rush to a single date.

Always confirm the exact cycle dates on the official g.a.s.t. portal before you register.

Exam Structure

The dMAT runs for about 3.5 hours (including a break), is taken in English, and uses a single-choice format on a computer. It has two components:

Core Module · ~90 min · 3 subtests

General analytical and cognitive reasoning — no subject knowledge required:

Logical / figural reasoning — figure sequences where you work out how shapes change and continue the pattern.
Numerical reasoning — systems of mathematical equations solved for unknown values.
Rule-based thinking — Latin-square grids where each symbol appears once per row and column.

Subject Module · ~90 min · General Academic

For APS India applicants this is the General Academic Module: you read short problems and answer linked questions, applying your reasoning to academic-style scenarios rather than recalling formulas. A 30-minute break separates the two modules.

How It's Scored

Score scale

0 – 200

Average score

100

Pass mark

None

Your result is a score on a 0–200 scale (100 is the average) plus a percentile rank comparing you to other test-takers. There is no pass or fail. Each university decides independently how much weight to place on the number — so think of it as one more data point in your profile, not a gate.

How to Register — Step by Step

1

Create an account on the g.a.s.t. portal

Registration for the dMAT is handled online through the official g.a.s.t. portal. Create your account and enter your personal details exactly as they appear on your passport.

2

Choose your test centre and date

Select an available test centre in India and a date within the registration window. Centres for the first cycle include New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Chandigarh and Mananthavady, with more expected over time.

3

Pay the €150 fee

Pay the dMAT fee of €150 during registration. This is separate from your APS fee. Registration is only confirmed once payment is complete, so don't leave it to the final day.

4

Sit the exam

Attend your test centre on the scheduled date. The dMAT is roughly 3.5 hours including the break, taken in English on a computer with single-choice questions across the Core and Subject modules.

5

Download your certificate & attach it to APS

Your certificate becomes available on the portal a couple of weeks after the exam (12 October 2026 for the first cycle). Submit it as part of your APS documentation — it is then reflected in your APS certificate and shared with your universities.

How Much Does It Actually Matter?

The dMAT is an additional document inside APS, not a replacement for it and not a standalone admission exam. It does not replace anabin recognition or APS document verification, and each university decides for itself how much weight the score carries.

Bottom line: a strong score can strengthen a borderline profile, and a weak score won't on its own get your APS certificate rejected. Universities such as RWTH Aachen and the University of Göttingen were among the first to use it as a selection criterion — expect more competitive programs to factor it in over time. Your CGPA, degree relevance, SOP and language scores still matter most.

Mistakes & Things to Watch

Assuming it applies to you when it doesn't — Bachelor's, PhD, and out-of-field applicants are exempt. Check your degree group before paying.
Confusing it with APS — the dMAT is extra, not a replacement. You still complete the full APS process.
Registering on the last day — slots and the payment step can bottleneck near the deadline; the window is fixed.
Cramming a syllabus — it's an aptitude test. Practising reasoning patterns and timed problem-solving beats memorising content.
Treating it as pass/fail — there's no cutoff; aim for a solid percentile but don't panic over a single number.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The dMAT is mandatory only for Indian students applying for a Master's degree whose bachelor's is in Engineering, Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics, or Business/Management. Bachelor's applicants, PhD applicants, and Master's applicants whose degree falls outside those three field groups do not need it. It is also only required from the Summer Semester 2027 intake onwards.

The dMAT becomes a required part of your APS documentation for the Summer Semester 2027 intake and every intake after it. It is NOT required for the Winter Semester 2026/27 intake — students applying for Winter 2026/27 can apply the usual way without a dMAT score.

No. The dMAT does not replace APS, anabin degree recognition, or document verification. It is an additional document that becomes part of your APS file. You still complete the full APS process — the dMAT result is simply attached to it and reported to the universities you apply to.

There is no official pass or fail mark. Your result is reported on a 0–200 scale (with 100 as the average) plus a percentile rank showing how you did relative to other test-takers. Each German university decides on its own how much weight to give your score. A low score does not, by itself, cause your APS certificate to be rejected.

The dMAT fee is €150, paid during registration on the g.a.s.t. portal — this is separate from the APS fee. The first cycle is offered at test centres across India including New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Chandigarh and Mananthavady, with more centres expected to be added.

Your dMAT score does not expire — you take it once and the certificate stays valid indefinitely. Because it is an aptitude test rather than a pass/fail exam, most applicants sit it a single time and submit that result with their APS documents.

No. A high score does not guarantee admission and a low score does not automatically mean rejection. The dMAT is one signal among many — your CGPA, degree relevance, SOP, language scores and overall profile still drive the decision. Universities like RWTH Aachen and the University of Göttingen were among the first to use it as a selection criterion.

The dMAT tests reasoning, not memorised syllabus. Practice figure/pattern sequences, systems of equations, rule-based logic grids (Latin-square style), and short applied problem-solving scenarios under time pressure. Get comfortable with a computer-based, single-choice format. Start alongside your university shortlisting rather than at the last minute.
