The Bavarian formula, explained

The Modified Bavarian Formula was developed by Bavarian universities to compare foreign grades fairly against Germany's 1.0–4.0 scale (1.0 is best, 4.0 is the lowest passing grade). It's now recommended by the DAAD and used across the country.

German GPA = 1 + 3 × ((10 − CGPA) / (10 − 5))

10 is the maximum grade on the Indian scale; 5 is the standard minimum passing grade used for conversion (even if your institution's actual pass mark is 4.0 or 4.5).

= 1 + 3 × ((10 − 8.5) / 5)

= 1 + 3 × (1.5 / 5)

What German GPA do you actually need?

Cutoffs vary, but here's the realistic shape of the German university market:

  • TU9 universities

    2.5 or better

    RWTH Aachen, TU Munich, KIT, TU Berlin, TU Dresden and peers. Competitive programs often admit around 2.0–2.3. TU Munich engineering is especially selective.

  • Mid-tier universities

    Up to 3.0

    FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg, University of Stuttgart, Mannheim, TU Darmstadt. Reasonable targets for CGPA in the 7.0–7.9 range.

  • Minimum threshold

    3.5

    Most universities won't process applications below 3.5 (~5.5 CGPA). That's a floor, not a target.

Important limitations

  • This is an approximation. The actual GPA a specific university uses may differ slightly based on their internal weighting.
  • Some universities accept percentage marks directly and convert them internally — check the admissions page for the preferred format.
  • A few institutions, especially direct-portal universities (not Uni-Assist), use their own minimum/maximum thresholds specific to your Indian institution.
  • The formula assumes 5.0 as the minimum passing grade. If your institution uses 4.0 or 4.5 as the pass mark, your converted GPA may shift slightly.
  • Always verify against the official Zulassungsvoraussetzungen page of each university you apply to.
