How & Where to Apply
Apply Online via the Consular Services Portal
Since 2025, every German student-visa application from India starts online on the Consular Services Portal (CSP). You fill the form and upload documents there first — then visit a VFS Global centre only for biometrics.

You only travel to a centre once your file is pre-checked — for fingerprints, your photo, and passport submission. The centre that serves you depends on your state of residence.
You're applying for the National D visa (Visum zu Studienzwecken) for stays over 90 days. The fee is roughly €75 (~₹8,300). The CSP replaced the old paper-at-the-counter process — so budget time for the online pre-check plus the appointment wait, and start the moment you have your admission letter.

Attach digital copies of everything — APS, admission letter, blocked account, insurance, passport. The full list is the checklist right below this section.
Embassy pre-check
The mission reviews your file for completeness — usually about a week, up to a month in peak season. You may get a 2–3 week window to fix or add anything missing.

Once pre-checked, the portal issues a link to book your biometrics slot at a VFS Global centre — see “Booking Your Appointment” further down.

Rejection Prevention

90% of rejections are preventable. These are the 8 mistakes that cause most student visa refusals — and exactly how to avoid each one.

Insufficient Blocked Account
Submitting with less than €11,904 in the blocked account, or using a personal savings account instead of an official Sperrkonto.
Fix: Open Fintiba or Expatrio and transfer the full amount before booking your appointment. - 02REJECTION
Expired or Near-Expiry Passport
Passport validity ending within 6 months of your study program end date. Embassies will not issue a visa that outlasts the passport.
Fix: Renew your passport before applying. Allow 4–6 weeks for passport renewal in India. - 03REJECTION
Missing or Unrecognised APS Certificate
Not having the APS certificate, submitting a photocopy without the original, or the APS processing taking longer than expected.
Fix: Apply for APS immediately after acceptance. It takes 4–8 weeks and is non-negotiable. - 04HIGH RISK
Non-Biometric Photographs
Wrong size (not 35×45mm), coloured or patterned background, wearing glasses or a hat, or photos older than 6 months.
Fix: Get photos at a certified photo studio. Show them the German embassy biometric photo guide. - 05HIGH RISK
Incomplete or Unsigned Application Form
Leaving fields blank, using correction fluid, or forgetting to sign and date every required page of the online-generated form.

Arriving at the appointment without confirmed housing — some embassies reject applications on the spot without it.

Submitting transcripts in regional language without certified English/German translation by a sworn translator.

Confirm accommodation
Email your dorm or landlord. Confirm move-in date and key collection procedure.
Get a travel SIM

Carry all documents in cabin bag
Never check in your passport, visa, APS certificate, admission letter, or insurance. Carry-on only.
Notify your Indian bank
