Note: These are guidelines based on typical admission patterns — each program differs. A student with 7.2 CGPA may be admitted to a Tier 1 program with exceptional research publications, relevant internships, and a strong SOP.

Avoid These

Eligibility Mistakes

These are the most common eligibility-related errors that cause Indian students to waste application cycles. Read carefully — all are avoidable.

Not Converting CGPA Correctly

Critical

Indian 10-point CGPA is not the same as a German grade. A 8.0/10 CGPA does not equal 80% — your university's conversion formula matters. Using a wrong scale can make your application look weaker than it is.

Fix: Request an official CGPA-to-percentage certificate from your university registrar. Use WES or your university's official scale when converting.

Applying to Overreach Without Safeties

High Risk

Many students apply only to TUM, LMU, and KIT with a 7.0 CGPA — and receive all rejections. The emotional and financial cost of a wasted application cycle is enormous.

Fix: Always include 2 safety universities where your CGPA exceeds their minimum by at least 0.5 points. Balance ambition with realism.

Ignoring Subject-Field Match

Critical

German universities prioritize academic coherence. Applying to an Electrical Engineering program with a Computer Science degree — without bridging coursework — raises a red flag in every application.

Fix: Check the 'Zulassungsvoraussetzungen' (admission requirements) of each program. Look for required prerequisite modules and fill gaps with MOOCs if needed.

Not Checking APS Requirement

High Risk

Most German universities require APS certification for Indian applicants. Students who skip this step discover the requirement only after receiving conditional admission — losing 2+ months.

Fix: Confirm APS requirements for every program you're applying to. Start the APS process at least 3 months before your application deadline.

Backlogs / Arrears Impact

Watch Out

A history of backlogs (failed courses requiring retakes) is not automatically disqualifying, but it must be disclosed. Undisclosed backlogs lead to application fraud findings — which can result in permanent bans.

Fix: Always disclose backlogs. Address them in your SOP with context: failed once in a difficult semester but recovered and graduated on time. Honesty builds trust.

Wrong Language Score

High Risk

Applying to a German-taught program with only an IELTS score — or vice versa — means your application is incomplete before it's even reviewed.

Fix: For each university shortlisted, check the exact language requirement in the admission portal. Some programs accept both; others require one specific test.

Common Questions

Eligibility questions answered clearly — no jargon

A below-threshold CGPA doesn't automatically disqualify you — but you'll need to compensate elsewhere. Strong GRE scores (if accepted), published research, a highly relevant internship, or an exceptionally clear SOP can sometimes tip the scales. However, applying to multiple universities in a lower tier while working on strengthening your profile is always the safer strategy. Don't gamble your only application on an overreach.

The dMAT (digital Master Test) is a new, mandatory part of the APS process for Master's applicants in Engineering, Business or Economics fields — from the Summer 2027 intake. Its registration windows are fixed, so plan it before APS.
